For many of us, February is a month for reflecting on our relationships with our loved ones. How we build our relationships and bond with our young children can highly impact them long past childhood. Bonding is the process of creating a loving, healthy attachment with your child. A 2012 study by the Essential Parent Company showed that around 80% of new parents felt both anxious and completely unprepared for the practical skills they need to look after their new baby.[1] This is where a healthy support system becomes a necessity.
Babies naturally bond with their parents, but they can also develop close attachments with other people who regularly, lovingly care for them and make them feel safe. This close circle may include grandparents, paid caregivers, other family members and friends Regardless of how big or small your support system may be, The Children’s Cabinet is here to help our parents and caregivers (If you are a new parent looking for resources and support- please reach out, and take a look at our last Vroom blog post for new parents).  Vroom has many essential tips to help you bond with your little one, and establish a healthy relationship from day one.

Vroom

Vroom Tip of the Month

Today’s Vroom Tip is called ‘Daily Challenge’. During your nightly routine, create a story out of some part of your day. Did you finish some big project at work? Make a dramatic story out of it. Use ‘characters,’ objects, and big facial expressions your child might recognize to keep them engaged, but also introduce new words to them when you can. Watch your child’s eyes light up as they enjoy your story, and this will surely be a beautiful bonding moment that both you and your child look forward to each night.

Learn the Science: The Importance of Strong Caregiver-Child Relationships

More and more evidence in various fields from developmental psychology to neurobiology shows us that parental neglect, parental inconsistency, and a lack of love is strongly correlated to long-term mental health problems with the child as well as their overall success and happiness later in life. When we think about what it means to be a ‘good’ caregiver to young children we might feel inundated with information on the topic, but the research points to one thing particularly- “The most valuable gift that a child can receive is free; it’s simply a parent’s love, time, and support”(Winston & Chicot, 2016).

Now that we’ve discussed the importance of creating a bond with your child, let’s talk the ways you can interact with a young child in a way that promotes a healthy bond with them. Vroom’s Brain Building Basics are used to promote your child’s brain development while bonding with them. Please check out below –

If you try looking where your child looks, taking turns playing and talking with them, making and stretching out fun conversations, and following a child’s lead then you are creating a healthy bond with them that will have lasting effects throughout their lifetime. All of these Vroom Brain Building Basics are rooted in the science of growing our children’s brains healthy and strong to prepare them for a long and successful life ahead of them.

There are many free programs for caregivers looking for tips on how to create a close bond with their children. Parenting is hard, give yourself some grace and reach out for help if and when you need it.  If you would like to know how the Children’s Cabinet can support you, or connect you with other resources, call us:

The joys of parenting are endless, and the love we have for our children runs deep. Yet, that is not to say that being a parent, especially a new parent, is without its challenges. The Children’s Cabinet and Vroom are here to help you through these challenges.
Please reach out to the Children’s Cabinet to find more information about our resources. It is our mission to keep children safe and families together, and we whole-heartedly live by this mission in all of our programs.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT

Point of Impact: Car Seat Inspection

Being a New Parent can be a time for a lot of new experiences. This can be both amazing and stressful. The last thing a new parent needs to worry about is their child’s safety. This is where why our amazing partners at REMSA and the Children’s Cabinet are hosting a Car Seat Inspection Checkpoint Event through the Point of Impact program on January 20th.The Point of Impact program offers free checkpoints throughout the community. Staff and volunteers will check for obvious defects and determine whether the car seat appears on a national recall list. In addition, they will check the installation, correct any problems, and provide education on the proper use and installation of the car seat. For checkpoints, bring your child(ren) if possible, and car seat(s) and expect the process to take about 30-45 minutes. If you have more than one car seat it may take longer.

For more information on this January event please see the event flyer

For other Car Seat Inspection events this year, click here: POI 2024 Events Flyer.

Vroom Tip of the Month

Babies are born ready to learn! This motto is at the heart of Vroom’s brain-building movement. While they are ready to learn, their brains are far from done developing. Their brains are very active at birth. At this age, every interaction, conversation, response, and so on helps build new connections in their brain. These connections form the foundation for their brain’s continued development. Check out this tip called Tummy Textures with your infant. Engaging and bonding are so important during infancy. Finding a way to involve them in your everyday activities grows their brain with each interaction.

Learn the Science: Supporting Yourself While You Support Your Baby

The research shows that there are many challenges that new parents face. To many parents this comes as no surprise as your mind, body, and life change when becoming a parent. Many new moms experience either ‘baby blues’ or postpartum depression (PPD). The CDC describes baby blues as a ‘common term given to mother’s experience mild and brief sadness, worry, and tiredness’. While Postpartum lasts longer and is characterized by more intense feelings of stress and depression-like symptoms.  According to the CDC, women are at a higher risk for depression if they have less social support than their peers (among many other factors).
Depression does not only affect new mothers. Fathers also report symptoms of depression after the birth of their new baby. While there is still a lot of research to be done on father’s postpartum depression, the research currently shows that fathers can experience many of the same postpartum depression symptoms as their female counterparts.

The Children’s Cabinet and many of our partner organizations across Nevada are here to help new parents wherever we can. There are many other free programs for new parents and their children. You are not alone! Parenting is hard, give yourself some grace and reach out for help if and when you need it. If you are curious to learn more about PPD, follow the links below. SUMMERTIME VROOM TIPS

TIPS FOR PLAYING OUTDOORS

Vroom is different from other educational apps. Vroom is the app that is meant to be put down in order to use it correctly. It has many tips that you can use for your next summertime outing. Going for a walk? Use the Path Predictor tip. Looking to have a picnic and relax? Try the Cloud Watching tip. Or are you looking to play a game to pass the time on a trip to the park? Play ‘Red Light, Green Light’ and try this tip to make the game more challenging for your child’s growing brain. If you’re on the go and not sure how to pass the time with young child, download the Vroom app or text GROW to (or CRECER to receive Tips in Spanish) to 48258.

TIPS FOR ROAD TRIPS

If you want to bring brain-building activities with you on a summer road trip, look no further. Vroom has customized tips for your family to use while on the road on vacation. Print these tips or take a screenshot to bring in your luggage. Click the links below to check out your summer Vroom tips-

Vroom Tip: Practing Perspective Taking

Children are little scientists! They love asking questions, are eager to observe the people and things around them, and are constantly experimenting to learn how the world works. Try this tip to encourage your preschooler to take a hands-on approach to their own learning. When children play an active role in their own learning, we are encouraging them to be life-long learners. It also helps them to better understand the subject matter. Not to mention it helps build your relationship with your little one!

June is a month of many celebrations. June 18th is Father’s Day! We want to celebrate all the wonderful fathers and father figures out there! As the video says, every little thing you do makes a difference in your child’s life. Being a parent or caregiver is a challenge at times, but the hard work is so worth it and does not go unnoticed. The research is in, children whose fathers are involved in their daily care such as feeding, bathing and playing together, tend to be more confident; and, as they grow older, enjoy stronger social connections with peers. For more information on the research on fatherhood click here.

April is an important month – it is National Child Abuse Prevention Month! This is a month where many individuals and organizations come together to highlight the importance of systems and programs that support our families as part of a bigger effort to keep children safe. As a community we can work together to prevent child abuse and neglect. There are many great resources across Nevada that seek to prevent Child Abuse in many different ways. Please reach out to the Children’s Cabinet to find more information about our resources. It is our mission to keep children safe and families together, and we whole-heartedly live by this mission in all of our programs.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT

Pinwheels for Prevention

Pinwheels represent “lightheartedness and the vision for a world where all children grow up happy, healthy, and prepared to succeed in supportive families and communities” (Prevent Child Abuse America). This is why the Children’s Cabinet joins many organizations across the nation in hosting a Pinwheels for Prevention event. This year the Washoe County Library System generously offered their Sparks Library location to host the event. Families and community partners came out and helped us plant pinwheels in support of preventing child abuse in Nevada.

Want to plant a pinwheel in your yard to show your support? Click here for the pinwheels template and instructions provided by Prevent Child Abuse America.

Vroom Tip: Practing Perspective Taking

Talking to our children about what others are thinking helps them understand someone else’s perspective as early as the Pre-K age years. Did you know children that have better perspective taking skills are shown to have less aggressive interactions with others? By helping promote perspective taking skills we are helping our children with so many things, including their social skills. We can promote this life skill by talking about what a character might be feeling throughout a story as we read with our children, or by asking what other children and adults might be feeling in real-world situations. Try this tip with your little one, and remember to be patient – learning to take someone’s perspective takes time.

Our senses are one of the first things we use to understand the world around us. We see, hear, smell, taste, and touch things in our environment to process information and gain a deeper understanding. When children are given a new toy they might look it over, squeeze it, and even put it in there mouth. This serves an important purpose as it allows children to begin to put the pieces of the puzzles of our world together. Vroom has many tips on how we can enhance sensory moments with our little scientists! These tips can be used at home, school, in the car, on a walk – anywhere! Did you know, you can also download the free Libby app to start reading free e-books and audiobooks?

Vroom's Three Core Scientific Principles

1. Positive Adult-Child Relationships

  • Positive, supportive experiences with adult caregivers are important to children’s brain development. These interactions help a child’s brain grow strong, and build their bond with the important the adults in a child’s life.

2. Back and Forth Interactions
  • During the earliest years of life, back and forth interactions between a child and their caregivers create millions of neural connections in the child’s brain.

3. Life Skills Promote Executive Function

  •  Executive function skills are at the heart of Vroom’s tips and activities. Executive Functions are skills we use to help us listen to instructions, plan ahead, have self-contol,  focus our attention, and juggle multiple tasks.

Hello everyone! My name is Hannah West, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new Mind in the Making and Vroom Coordinator for the Children’s Cabinet. I truly believe that the children are our future, and that they are capable of any and all success that they strive for. This is why I have resonated with Vroom and Mind in the Making. These complimentary programs acknowledge that a caregiver is a child’s first teacher, and seek to provide tools and tips on how to promote our children’s brain development.  If you have any questions on either program, or if you would just like to reach out please feel free to do so! I am always looking to meet more members of our beautiful communities across Nevada.

Creating Everyday Experiments

The beauty of Vroom is that it makes an everyday task into playtime. For example: taking a snow day and turning it into a day to experiment with our children is a wonderful way to make a few minutes of the day a Brain Building Moment. This video highlights a few examples of how we can take regular household items and recycle them into a fun activity!

The Twelve Days of Vroom Tips

The holidays are a great time to have a Brain Building moment with the children in our lives. It’s also a time where we as adults can be very busy, and that’s where Vroom comes in. Vroom partnered with Mississippi Thrive to create The 12 Days of Vroom Tips – a fun and easy set of brain building tips that can be fit into any busy schedule. Summer is a great time to keep the learning going while out and about or even taking a summer road trip. Make the most of the time you share with your little ones by exploring together and talking back and forth about what you see and experience. You are your child’s first and most important teacher!

Shopping Together

Running errands with your child may take a little longer, but shopping is a great opportunity to build your child’s brain. As you take your child through the market, point to familiar products. Talk about colors and numbers and follow your child’s interests to help connect what they know with what’s on the shelf. Your child’s brain is making connections between what they point at and see, and the words you are using – helping to boost their communication skills.

Program Highlight: Family Reading Program

The Family Reading Program at the Northern Nevada Literacy Council is dedicated to improving literacy in homes all over Nevada. The FRP provides books and materials to families to build their home libraries and facilitate activities in relation to the books. The program staff incorporates ideologies from Vroom and  Mind in the Making to promote life skills in early childhood and to guide parents in promoting reading and meaningful interactions with their children. They’ve even created short videos like this one to help parents make the most of reading time!

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the Family Reading Program, contact the Northern Nevada Literacy Council at (775) 356-1007.

Join us on May 20 for this free webinar about brain building.

Only 15 minutes, this is a perfect opportunity to learn how you can play a role in supporting the brain development of children in your community during a small portion of your lunch!

Research shows there is no better time to create a strong foundation for lifelong learning than the first five years of life. It’s during this period that the brain develops most rapidly. And the things that matter most for healthy brain development, like talking and playing, don’t require more time, money, or stuff.

Vroom believes all parents want what’s best for their children. With scientists, researchers, and parents, Vroom takes the science out of the lab and put it in the hands of caregivers. Vroom provides science-based tips and tools to inspire families to turn shared, everyday moments into Brain Building Moments®. The Children’s Cabinet is honored to be the program coordinator for Vroom in Nevada and we love being able to share all the information with this community.

So, what will you learn in the Vroom Brain Development Webinar?

  1. 90% of the brain is developed before a child enters kindergarten.
  2. It is easy to think parents play a role in brain development, but businesses also play a promising role in lifting the importance of early brain development in children.
  3. Vroom makes it easy and the partnership with The Children’s Cabinet makes these resources free and available throughout the state of Nevada.
  4. Vroom is a science-based, worldwide movement to create resilient kids and families using simple, no-cost activities. These can be done at home, on-the-go, or anywhere!
  5. Vroom materials are free and available! Join the webinar to learn what those are and how to access them.

You will learn all these key elements during the webinar as well as how you can be a brain builder!
